They offer personalized meal plans that are tailored to your dog’s individual needs and preferences, taking into account factors such as their age, breed, weight, and activity level.  You answer some questions about your pup (it takes less than 5 minutes) and they’ll generate exactly what your fury little friend needs food-wise.

The Farmer’s Dog believes that the key to good health for dogs is to feed them real, whole foods, and they use only the highest-quality, all-natural ingredients in their recipes. Their meals are cooked in small batches to ensure freshness and are never frozen.

They even have a team of veterinary nutritionists who oversee their recipes and ensure that they meet the highest standards for canine nutrition. And don’t worry, they also conduct extensive testing on their products to ensure their safety and quality!

In addition to offering high-quality dog food, The Farmer’s Dog also prioritizes sustainability and environmental responsibility. They use recyclable packaging and work with farmers to source their ingredients in a way that is both ethical and sustainable.

How Does It Work

The Farmer’s Dog makes it really easy to get things started.  First, just visit their site and create an account. During the account creation process, you’ll provide some basic information about your dog, such as their breed, weight, age, and activity level.

Based on this info, The Farmer’s Dog will create a personalized meal plan for your dog, which will include a selection of their fresh, human-grade dog food recipes.

You can choose to receive deliveries weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, and you can always adjust your meal plan or delivery frequency as needed.

When it’s time for a delivery, they prepare your dog’s meals in small batches using only the highest-quality, all-natural ingredients. The food will be packaged in recyclable containers and shipped straight to your door.

Once you receive your delivery, you can store the meals in your refrigerator or freezer until you’re ready to serve them to your dog. Each meal will come with serving instructions based on your dog’s individual needs.

My Personal Experience (and Toby's!)

As you may know, I have the best dog in the world.  His name is Toby and (at the time I wrote this article) he’s a nine-month old Schnoodle and makes me laugh on the daily.

When I got him from the breeder (at 2-months old) he ate salmon flavored kibble and was happy to eat it for such a long period of time.  That is until…

People warned me that eventually he would get bored with his food.  For me, it happened out of nowhere.  He went from being excited to eat, to walking over to his bowl, smelling it, and walking away.  For almost 2 months, feeding him three meals per day was a nightmare.

I would put his kibble into toys to try to make a game out of it.  That worked for officially 2 days and then it went back to him being less than thrilled at meal-time.  Other things I tried included:

  • Added a little warm water to the kibble to make it like a gravy.
  • Added sliced carrots to it.
  • Added little pieces of hard-boiled egg to it.
  • Added store-bought chicken toppers to it.
  • Added a prebiotic powder to it.
  • Bought a felt loop mat so he could play at the same time he ate.
  • Bought two different puzzles I could hide the kibble in to make it more interesting for him.
  • Placed it inside a ball with little holes in it.
  • Placed his kibble directly on the floor instead of the bowl.
  • Tried feeding him out of my hand.
  • Added those Kong peanut-butter and cheese sprays to it.
  • Added the Pup-Cup whipped cream to it.

I mean, the list of things I tried was endless.  ENDLESS.

Any toppers I added to his kibble worked ok.  But he basically just ate the toppers and left the kibble. I knew it was time to wave the white flag after 2 months of trying and go with something else.

I had read reviews about The Farmer’s Dog and, while it is expensive, I decided to give it a try.  If Toby wasn’t into it, I could cancel the subscription and try something else.

Filling out Toby’s profile was easy and fast (less than 5 minutes) and based on his personal info they came up with a meal plan for him specifically.

The flavors I chose was:  Turkey, Pork, and Beef.  There was a chicken option, but I decided to skip that one since Toby’s kibble was chicken flavored I think we both had a little PTSD from it.

In order to save the most, I chose the monthly subscription plan.  He gets all his meals for the month delivered at once and the packets easily store in my freezer.  Just pop one out about 24 hours before you want to feed your pup and place it in the refrigerator to thaw a bit.  Keep in mind, it’s not frozen food, it’s just stored that way.

Tip: If you forget to take the packet out of the freezer in time and it's time to feed your pup, simply run the package under warm water for about 30-60 seconds and it's good to go. I've had to do this countless times and it works well!

What I thought was really helpful was how each package of food is marked to exactly where I need to cut it so I know exactly how much to feed Toby for the day.  Oh, and there’s a cute personal touch they add to each package by putting Toby’s name on it.  I laugh every time I see “Toby’s Turkey.”

So, the outcome?  THE VERY FIRST MEAL I gave Toby he freaked out over.  No, for real.  I let him just smell it and he licked his lips, twirled in a circle and ran to the part of the kitchen I typically feed him.

He ate everything in about 30 seconds (which I need to slow him down) and literally licked the bowl clean.  He then walked away and came back about 20 seconds later to keep licking the bowl.  Mind you, it was empty at this point.  I almost cried tears of joy because he actually loved the food and for the first time in 2 months it wasn’t a complete battle to get him to eat.

Toby loves all the flavors and 2 months later he still loves them.  What’s insane to me is that since it’s human-grade good it actually smells good.  I was afraid of that nasty scent some foods have, but the turkey legit smells like a leftover turkey dinner.

I have noticed that his itching has decreased a bit (probably because of the salmon oil that’s in each recipe), but it’s not totally gone so I still gotta work through that.

I’ll keep updating this article as time goes on to let you know anything else that Toby and I are noticing, but I’d say it was a huge success.  One less thing to worry about…for once!

Overall Pros & Cons of The Farmer's Dog

I wanted to make sure I provided a short list of some of the pros and cons of my experience with The Farmer’s Dog and things that could impact your interest level.  Every experience is different, of course, but here are some things to keep in mind.

What I Loved:

  • Fresh, human-grade ingredients that are tailored to your dog’s individual needs.
  • Convenient delivery straight to your door on a customizable schedule.
  • High-quality recipes overseen by veterinary nutritionists.
  • Environmentally friendly packaging that is easy to recycle.
  • Good option for dogs with dietary restrictions or sensitivities.
  • Toby legit LOVES meal time (finally!).

Just a Heads-Up:

  • Can definitely be more expensive than traditional dog food options.
  • Requires refrigeration or freezing, which may be inconvenient for some especially if you travel a lot.
  • Limited variety of recipes compared to some other dog food brands.
  • May not be a good option for dogs with certain medical conditions or special dietary needs – check with your vet first
