It’s the latest trend that’s been taking over TikTok and we’re here for it.  But if there any truth to adding rosemary oil to your hair can actually promote new hair growth?  And, if so, which brands can help with that?  We’re looking into it all.

Best Rosemary Oils For Hair Growth in Men + Women 2024

It seems like these days every new trend that’s going viral is stemming from TikTok.  And this new rosemary essential oil trend is no different.  In fact, video views on TikTok on people using it to help regrow their hair tops more than 20 million views.  So to say I was intrigued, is a total understatement.

When it comes to hair loss, it really does impact both men and women.  From general male pattern baldness to just overall thinning hair, there are millions of folks who want thicker and fuller hair.  But can adding drops of rosemary oil to your scalp really help?  That’s the million dollar question.

According to some medical professionals, they claim that essential rosemary oil can help with things like:

  • Having anti-inflammatory functions
  • Improves circulation
  • Promotes nerve growth

It’s even said that it can help with pre-mature greying of your hair and even with dry and itchy scalps.

A lot of the buzz recently surrounding this actually dates back to 2015 when a study came out claiming that using rosemary oil on your scalp can, not only, help prevent hair loss but also help to grow new hair.  In fact, the study shows that it had the same effect as using minoxidil (the main ingredient in Rogaine) and without the side effects.

If you want to give a try, there are a few different recommendations on how to use it, when to use it, and when to expect results (if at all).  Most recommendations agree that you should use about 5 drops of 100% rosemary essential oil daily (once or twice a day depending on how your scalp responds) and not to rinse it out.  If you have a sensitive scalp or it becomes irritated, you can also mix it with your shampoo or “carriers” like coconut oil or jojoba oil.

Personally, I’ve been using it in the shower and applying it directly to my scalp.  I then use my fingers or my shampoo brush to massage it in.  The smell can be a bit strong depending on which brand you purchase, but overall it kind of makes your bathroom smell like a spa.  Some experts claim that you may see some new hair growth around the 3-month mark and at 6-months many saw significant hair growth.

There are some decent before and after pictures on Reddit (so many strings to follow) where you can see some results.  As always, I say to consult your doctor first before trying anything and to make sure that your hair loss or thinning may not be due to something else.

Once you get the clear to give it a go, there are a few ways you can try this.

  • Add 5 drops directly to your scalp daily.
  • Mix it with carriers like coconut or jojoba oil.
  • Add it directly to your shampoo (follow a formula based on the ounces of shampoo in the bottle).
  • Purchase a shampoo that already has rosemary in it.

Look.  Things like this will always be a personal preference.  And when it comes to actual balding and hair loss, at this point, there is not 100% full-on cure.  However, things like rosemary oil, minoxidil, and finasteride can help to give your hair a fighting chance at growing back and preventing future fall-out.  So, I say if you want to give it a go do it!

Please just keep your expectations in check and give it at least 6-months to see if you’re experiencing any positive results.

If you’re looking to give this a go, check out my picks for some of the best rosemary oils and shampoos (so far) in 2024.

1. Handcraft Rosemary Essential Oil
HANDCRAFT

Handcraft 100% Rosemary Essential Oil

$24 | Amazon

This is the one that I purchased myself and use daily.  It even comes with the glass dropper which makes adding your 5 drops way easier than those brands that you have to just pour into your hand first.

One of the top rated options on Amazon with more than 62,000 ratings and reviews, this 4 ounce bottle will actually last you a while, is 100% pure and natural, is tested for quality by independent labs, and can easily blend in with other oils or into your existing shampoo.

2. Pure Rosemary Oil For Hair
MAPLE HOLISTICS

Maple Holisitics

$11 | Amazon

$13 | Walmart

A great runner up, this 100% essential oil is safe to use on your hair, your nails, your skin, or even in your own personal oil diffuser.  The price is pretty perfect, coming in at just around $11, but the only downfall is that this is for just a 1 ounce bottle so – if you like it – you’ll end up having to pickup a few.   This one will give you a nice shine to your hair, too, without weighing it down.

3. Organic Rosemary Mint
MIELLE

Organics Rosemary Mint

$10 | Amazon

$8 | Walmart

If you’re looking for something with some added benefits, check this top seller out from the Organics company.  While it does have rosemary oil in it, it’s also combined with mint and biotin.  Biotin is said to help with existing hair growth, smoothing split ends, and dry scalp.  While the mint also helps to sooth your scalp and skin.  I love that this is a fully women owned brand.

4. Rosemary Conditioning Hair Oil
WELEDA

$18 | Amazon

A brand that’s been around since 1921, this one helps to conditioner your hair, smooth it, restore it, and even add a nice shine to it – in additional to being great for your scalp and help to promote new hair growth.  It’s perfect for extra dry scalps too.

5. Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo
AVEDA

Aveda Rosemary Shampoo

$20 | Amazon

$20 | Aveda

$20 | Nordstrom

If you really don’t want to commit to the dropping oil directly onto your scalp, you can always give a shampoo that has rosemary in it already.  This best seller from Aveda, helps to clean your hair, purify it, detangle it and more.  Mixed with mint, this one smells amazing – definitely less strong than some of the other essential oil brands.

While all at the same price, I added the above trusted retailers because each offer different discount incentives.  For example, Nordstrom offers free shipping (check their coupons here), while Aveda is currently offering an extra 15% off promo code with email sign up.  And, of course, if you have Prime – Amazon is offering free 2-day shipping.
