Our review process

How a product actually earns a spot on Trendsicle.

Every site says its picks are researched. Here's the part most of them leave out: what we actually do, how long it takes, and what would get a product thrown off the list.

Short version, if you're in a hurry: we find what's trending, we read an unreasonable number of customer reviews, we buy a lot of it ourselves, and we say so when something isn't worth it. The long version is below.

The four stages

Nothing gets recommended without going through these. How long each one takes depends on the product, which is the honest answer rather than the tidy one.

1

ResearchEvery product

We start with the trend, not the product. The question is what people are actually buying and talking about right now, before we go anywhere near a buy button.
  • Cross-reference what's genuinely selling across 2,000+ trusted retailers
  • Read customer reviews by the dozen, and often by the hundred
  • Independent third-party reviews and news coverage, not just retailer pages
  • Comment sections and TikTok rabbit holes, because that's where people say what they really think
2

ReviewEvery product

We narrow to a shortlist and dig in properly. What matters here is what owners say six months in, not six days in.
  • Specs and real pricing history, so a "deal" is checked against what it normally costs
  • Recurring complaints, which are far more useful than an average star rating
  • Whether the thing is still made, still supported, and still worth buying
3

TestHands-on

For our individual reviews, an editor buys it, takes it home, and lives with it for a full week. Some things don't survive the week, and we publish that too.
  • Testing happens at home, in normal use, not in a studio
  • Up to 7 days with each product before we write a word about it
  • We buy about 99% of what we test with our own money
  • Not everything we test gets a good review, which is rather the point
4

UpdateEvery guide

A guide that's right in March can be wrong by November. Prices move, products get discontinued, and nobody sends us a memo.
  • Every guide gets revisited at least four times a year
  • Sold-out and discontinued picks get replaced, not quietly left up
  • Prices and deal claims get re-checked rather than assumed

What that costs us in hours

Most about pages say they're rigorous. This is the timesheet.

Two kinds of article, two different bars

It would be dishonest to claim we test every product in a 40-item gift guide. We don't, and neither does anyone else. So here's exactly which bar applies to what you're reading.

Individual reviews
Trendy AF · Is It Worth It
Hands-on
Always. An editor buys it and uses it for up to a full week.
Who pays
We do, about 99% of the time.
Can it get a bad review
Yes, and some do.
Roundups and gift guides
The lists and seasonal guides
Hands-on
Sometimes. These are more subjective by nature.
What we rely on
Products editors have gifted themselves, plus deep research: customer reviews, third-party reviews, news coverage.
Time per guide
Two to four working days.
And yes, we use tools We're real people, not the robot-monsters you've been reading about. But we're humble enough to admit we lean on a few proprietary trend tools to spot what's bubbling up early, across more than 2,000 trusted retailers. It doesn't mean a product gets in, it means we take a look. That's how we caught infuser machines, the HyperChiller, the Theragun, and that entire posture-corrector craze.

What we don't do

The rules below aren't aspirations. They're the reason you can trust the rest of this page.

We never take a product in exchange for a good review
Ever. And trust us, we get pitched constantly. If a brand does send something for consideration, we say so clearly in the article itself.
We never recommend something we haven't researched
No product goes on a list without either editor testing or real research behind it. There's no third option where we just guess.
We never sell placement quietly
No brand can pay its way into a guide unless the whole article is labeled for it: sponsored by, in partnership with, paid placement from. If it isn't labeled, nobody paid.
We never sell your information
We don't collect or sell your private data. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Ads on this site We've never run them and we don't now. They're annoying, they slow the page down, and we didn't want to do that to you. We earn our keep through affiliate links instead, which you can read about in our affiliate disclosure.
