Sephora's Beauty Insider spend counter resets every January 1, and where in the year you cross a tier line decides whether you keep that status for thirteen months or twenty-four. That timing is worth more than most of the sales.
We've covered retail sale events for more than eight years. Every threshold and rule below comes from Sephora's own Beauty Insider terms, and where we couldn't source something we've said so instead of guessing.

Crossing a tier line in December buys you half of what crossing it in January does
Sephora's terms say a tier is good for "the calendar year in which the member qualifies and the following full calendar year." Read that carefully, because it's doing a lot of work. Hit Rouge in January and you hold it through the end of the next year, which is close to twenty-four months. Hit it in December and you hold it for the same end date, which is barely thirteen.
The other half of the rule is the reset. Your spend counter goes back to zero on January 1, and it doesn't carry anything over. So sitting at $920 on December 20 is a genuinely bad place to be: $80 more gets you Rouge for the next year, and waiting until January means starting again from nothing.

Notice that the points rate is identical at all three tiers, and free standard shipping now covers every member rather than only the higher tiers. What you're really buying with spend is the bigger single redemption and the event access.
- Not what you thinkRouge's 1,000-point redemption isn't better value, just bigger. 500 points for $10 and 1,000 points for $20 are both 2 cents a point. The Rouge perk saves you a second transaction, it doesn't stretch your points further.
- TimingThe counter resets January 1 and carries nothing over. Spend $340 in a year and you finish with nothing to show for it, ten dollars short of VIB.
- In your favorStatus lasts longer than the year you earned it. Qualifying buys you the rest of the current year plus all of the next one, so the status always outlives the spending that bought it.
- In your favorFree standard shipping is no longer a tier perk. Every Beauty Insider member gets it on qualifying orders, so it isn't a reason to chase VIB the way it used to be.
- TimingOnly merchandise counts toward a tier. Gift cards and the parts of an order that aren't merchandise don't move you up, which catches people who thought a big gift-card purchase would push them over.
How much do I have to spend to reach VIB or Rouge?
$350 in a calendar year for VIB, $1,000 for Rouge, counting merchandise on fulfilled orders. Both reset on January 1, and nothing carries over from the previous year.
How long does Rouge status last?
The rest of the year you qualify in, plus the whole of the following year. That means the month you cross matters: qualifying in January gets you close to two years of it, while qualifying in December gets you a little over one.
What are Beauty Insider points worth?
Two cents each at the standard redemption. 500 points converts to $10 off instantly at checkout, and that's open to every member. Rouge members can also convert 1,000 points to $20, which is the same rate in one go rather than a better one.
Do I need VIB for free shipping?
Not any more. Sephora's current terms give free standard shipping to all Beauty Insider members on qualifying orders. Older guides still describe a tiered version of this with $35 and $50 minimums, and that's out of date.
When is the next Sephora Savings Event?
Sephora runs these roughly twice a year, in spring and again around the holidays, but it doesn't publish the dates in advance and there's no event running as we write this. We've marked them as windows below rather than invent a date. If you're close to a tier line, the more useful thing to watch is the December 31 reset, which is fixed.
