Everyone assumes refurbished is the insider move, but Vitamix reconditioned machines carry a shorter warranty than new ones: three years on a reconditioned Explorian and five on everything else, against five, seven and ten years new. Right now a reconditioned Ascent X2 is $399.95 while a new one is $499.95 on sale. That’s $100 to go from five years of cover to ten. When Vitamix is running a sale on new machines, reconditioned is frequently the worse buy, which is the opposite of how these pages usually read.
Vitamix sells three lines and the differences between them are smaller than the prices suggest. The motors are near identical: two horsepower on the Explorian and the Classic 5200, two point two on the Ascent. What you pay more for is electronics and warranty, not blending power.
The other thing worth knowing before you shop is that the sixty day in-home trial only exists if you buy from Vitamix directly. Buy the same machine elsewhere and the warranty travels with it, but the trial doesn’t.

None of this means reconditioned is a bad buy. It means the discount has to be big enough to pay for the years you’re giving up, and during a sale on new machines it often isn’t.
What Actually Counts as a Good Vitamix Deal
These machines rarely go cheap, so the question is less about the percentage and more about what the price includes.
- Check the height before anything else. The Classic 5200 is 20.5 inches tall and won’t fit under a standard upper cabinet. The Ascent X5 is 17 inches and the Explorian E310 is 18. This has ended more Vitamix purchases than price ever has.
- Container size runs opposite to price. The cheaper 5200 ships with a 64 ounce container. The premium Ascent X5 ships with 48 ounces. Bigger isn’t always the upgrade.
- The trial only exists direct. Vitamix offers a sixty day in-home trial for blenders bought on its own site, and pays return shipping inside that window. Buy elsewhere and you’re on the retailer’s normal return policy.
- Grinding spices costs you the container warranty. Vitamix states that grinding certain herbs and spices causes cosmetic marring, and that the container and blades aren’t covered when that happens.
- Household use only. The warranty applies to personal household use and excludes commercial, rental and resale use, which matters if you’re buying for a small food business.

How to Pick the Right Vitamix
Measure the gap under your cabinets. This is the first question, not the last. A 20.5 inch Classic 5200 in an 18 inch space becomes a machine that lives on the floor of a cupboard and never gets used.
Don’t buy the motor, buy the electronics. Two horsepower against two point two isn’t a real difference. Programs, the digital timer and container recognition are what your money actually buys on an Ascent.
Work out what the warranty years are worth. If reconditioned saves you $60 and costs you two years of cover, that’s a judgement call. If it saves you $100 and costs you five, buy new.
Buy direct if you’re unsure. The sixty day trial is only on the Vitamix site, and it’s the closest thing to a risk free way to find out whether you’ll actually use it.
Skip the spice grinding plan. If you were buying it partly to grind spices, know that doing so voids the container and blade coverage. Buy a cheap dedicated grinder instead.
