The Short Version

Both Ultimate Action figures are in stock at Amazon at $86.99 each. The selling point is that Woody and Buzz recognise each other and hold a conversation, but that only works if you own both, which is $173.98. Before you do that, know this: the Interactables two-pack does the same talking-to-each-other trick for $64.79 and includes both characters. That's the decision this page is really about.

Heads Up: You're Being Sold The Same Feature Twice

Read Mattel's own bullet on the Ultimate Action Woody listing: "If you put Woody together with an Ultimate Action Buzz Lightyear, and both are in Alive mode, they will recognize each other and converse back and forth. Each figure sold separately." That last sentence is the whole business model. The headline feature needs two $86.99 purchases to work at all.

Now read the Interactables two-pack bullet: "When you put the figures together and press the activating button they recognize each other and chat about their latest adventures!" Same trick, both figures in the box, $64.79 total. You are paying $109.19 extra for the Ultimate Action pair, and what that money buys is the clap activation, the animated facial expressions and head movement, and a Woody that's 16 inches instead of 12. Those are real upgrades. They are not $109 of upgrades for most families.

What The Ultimate Action Figures Actually Do

Worth explaining properly, because the feature list is genuinely more interesting than most licensed toys and it's the reason the price isn't absurd.

Mattel calls it Claptivation. The figure sits in Toy Mode, inert, exactly like a toy is supposed to be when a human is looking at it. Clap your hands or press Woody's belt buckle and he switches to Alive mode: the face animates, the head moves, and he talks. It's a straight lift of the film's central joke, and for a kid who has grown up on these movies, a Woody that "comes alive" when you leave the room is the toy version of the thing they already believe.

Then the pair trick. Put an Ultimate Action Woody and an Ultimate Action Buzz together, both in Alive mode, and they detect each other and start a back-and-forth conversation. Not alternating soundbites at random, an actual scripted exchange. There's also a traditional pull string on Woody for the classic phrases.

The Better Half 16 Inches Clap Activated

Sixteen inches, which is properly large for a talking figure, with the animated face, the head movement, the clap or belt-buckle activation and a real pull string. If you're only buying one of the two Ultimate Action figures, buy this one: he's four inches taller than Buzz for the same money, and the pull string gives him a second way to play that Buzz doesn't have.

Worth Knowing Same $86.99 buys you 16 inches of Woody or 12 inches of Buzz. If that seems like an odd way to price two halves of a pair, it is, and it's another small argument for buying Woody first and seeing whether the conversation feature is actually missed.

The Cheaper Way To Get The Same Trick

If the talking-to-each-other feature is the reason you're here, this is the honest recommendation, and it happens to be the cheaper one.

Saves $109 Both Included 4.5 Stars

Both figures at 12-inch scale, both loaded with movie phrases, and they recognise each other and chat when you put them together and press the button. Multiple posable joints so they display properly when they're not talking. It's the same core idea as the Ultimate Action pair, executed for a third of the combined price, and it's the only thing in the line rated by more than a handful of buyers.

Worth Knowing What you give up: no clap activation, no animated faces, and Woody is 12 inches rather than 16. The conversation is triggered by a button press instead of by clapping, which is less magical but considerably harder for a five year old to fail at.

What Buyers Are Saying

There are barely any reviews of the Ultimate Action figures yet. Woody has one rating. Buzz has two. That's not a sample, that's a rounding error, and any site presenting those star scores as a verdict is misleading you.

How the Interactables two-pack's 20 ratings break down. The Ultimate Action figures aren't shown, because one and two ratings tell you nothing.

Across the rest of the line, where the samples are larger, the scores are solid: Ragdoll Woody and the 7-inch Buzz both sit at 4.7, Running Woody at 4.4. Nothing here suggests Mattel has a quality problem with the Toy Story 5 range.

Our Read On The Reviews

Two things are true at once. The line as a whole reviews well, and the two most expensive items in it are effectively unreviewed. Spending $173.98 on a pair of figures that between them have three customer ratings is a different kind of purchase from spending $64.79 on the one item with a real sample behind it.

The two-star share on the Interactables works out at one or two people out of twenty, which is the range where a flat battery or a dented box explains it. There's no pattern there to read into.

The practical read: this is a wait-a-few-weeks product if you're considering the expensive pair. The film is recent, reviews will accumulate quickly through the autumn, and nothing here is scarce enough to punish patience. If you want a Toy Story 5 toy under the tree without the gamble, the two-pack and the cheaper figures are already proven.

Who It's For

Buy It If
  • The clap-to-come-alive gimmick is the whole point for you. Nothing cheaper does it.
  • You want a 16-inch Woody specifically. He's the standout piece in the range.
  • Budget isn't the constraint and you're happy being early on something barely reviewed.
  • It's a display piece as much as a toy. The Ultimate Action figures look the part.
Skip It If
  • You just want them to talk to each other. The two-pack does that for $64.79.
  • You'd rather not spend $174 on figures with three ratings between them.
  • The recipient is young. Clap activation is fiddly next to a button press.
  • You want the most toy per dollar. Running Woody at $29.60 has 50+ phrases and reviews well.

Toy Story 5 Woody & Buzz FAQ

Do Ultimate Action Woody and Buzz really talk to each other?+
Yes. Mattel's own listing says that with both figures together and both in Alive mode, they recognise each other and converse back and forth. The catch is in the next sentence of that same listing: each figure is sold separately, so the feature costs $173.98 to unlock.
Is there a cheaper way to get figures that talk to each other?+
Yes, and it's the same brand. The Toy Story 5 Interactables Woody & Buzz two-pack is $64.79, includes both 12-inch figures, and they recognise each other and chat when you press the activating button. You lose the clap activation, the animated faces and the 16-inch Woody, but you save $109.19.
How much does Ultimate Action Woody cost?+
$86.99 at Amazon, and Ultimate Action Buzz Lightyear is the same $86.99. Woody is 16 inches and Buzz is 12 inches, so you get noticeably more figure for the same money with Woody.
What is Claptivation?+
Mattel's name for the activation mechanic. The figure sits inert in Toy Mode, then a clap of the hands or a press on Woody's belt buckle switches it to Alive mode, where the face animates, the head moves and it speaks lines from the film. Woody also has a traditional pull string.
Are they sold out?+
No. Both Ultimate Action figures, the Interactables two-pack and the cheaper figures in the line are all in stock at Amazon at list price as of writing.
What's the best cheap Toy Story 5 toy?+
The 7-inch Buzz Lightyear playscale figure at $10.99, rated 4.7, is the best value entry point. Ragdoll Woody at $19.97 is also 4.7 and is the better choice for a younger child. Running Woody at $29.60 has more than fifty movie phrases and rates 4.4.

The Bottom Line: The Ultimate Action figures are the best-made things in this line and the clap-to-life mechanic is genuinely clever, but Mattel has built the headline feature so that it only works if you buy two $86.99 toys. Before you do, look hard at the Interactables two-pack: both characters, the same conversation trick, $64.79, and it's the only item here with enough reviews to mean anything. If you want the big 16-inch Woody with the animated face, buy him on his own and see whether anybody actually misses the conversation. Nothing is selling out, so there's no penalty for thinking about it.
